Color Drops
INTERACTIVE SCULPTURE • 2015 • with Johnathan West

Vision
The Color Drops are an ongoing participatory art project. Woven, super-sized raindrops with an internal platform, each Drop allows users to climb inside to their own "color control environment". LEDs light the Drops and are controlled by three RGB specific knobs around the internal seating area. Suspended when installed, the Drops rotate on 360 degree swivels, allowing for curl up space in motion. When without a participant inside a Drop, they will begin interacting with auditory input from anything surrounding it - music, voices, ambient noise.
Pieces of the Whole
Technology
Each Drop contains LED lights and a series of controllers which allow participants to interact with the sculptures. Lit above and below, the sculptures take on a life of their own if left unattended, reacting to music and sound.
Structure
The structures are created from high-tension para-cord, hand woven into handing drops. Rings from different woods hold the form and create space for participants to crawl inside.
Rigging
In order to suspend the sculptures safely, each Drop is rigged using equipment rated for climbing and suspension work. Though suspension from a fixed rig point is preferred, the Color Drops are often suspended between trees by rope. When suspended outside, trees and slings are constantly monitored for change and impact.
